Description:
This presentation defines a Palliative Model of Care that can
complement the Medical Model of Care. The Medical Model wants
to help people eliminate pain; the Palliative Model wants to
help people find meaning and value in the midst of pain. The
presentation shows how our own woundedness and the woundedness
of our patients can provide us with opportunities for growth:
providing an alternative perspective to our culture's emphasis
on hiding from pain, avoiding suffering, and ignoring death.
Much of the presentation is spent in outlining how caregivers
can manifest the important qualities of congruence, empathy,
and unconditional positive regard.
Objectives:
-
Describe a model of care that helps people find meaning and
value in the midst of pain and suffering.
-
Discuss how our woundedness can add to life, add to who we
are, and add to what we can do for others.
-
Describe how to exemplify congruence, empathy, and
unconditional positive regard.
-
Justify the importance of humility in being a good
caregiver.
