Description:
This
module discusses some of the key ethical issues and legal
concerns in end-of-life/palliative care and resources to
address these in practice. Ethical issues and dilemmas are
inherent in care provided to older adult patients and their
families facing the end of life.
Professional codes and standards serve to facilitate
resolution of ethical dilemmas.
Nurses, individually and collectively, serve as
advocates for ethical and legal practice at the end of life.
Objectives:

Describe specific roles of the nurse in ethical
decision-making.

Describe advance directives and their role in preventing
ethical dilemmas.

Apply ethical principles utilized in addressing
end-of-life/palliative care dilemmas, including models for
case analysis and use of ethics committees.
