ELNEC Geriatric Palliative Care: Module 7 - Loss, Grief, and Bereavement (1338)
46 minutes
0.7 contact hours/Continuing Nursing Education

Description:
This module addresses the challenging aspects of grief, loss and bereavement of older adult patients and families as well as the loss experiences of health care professionals. This module also reinforces that even with the provision of excellent palliative care, the loss of one's own life, or that of a loved one, creates intense grief. Palliative care can facilitate adaptation to loss and greatly relieve distress and suffering. Nurses also require support for their own grief in caring for the terminally ill.

Objectives:

  • Describe three tasks of grief.
  • Provide three interventions that may be appropriate to facilitate normal grief.
  • Verbalize an understanding of grief and loss issues as they relate to complex or traumatic circumstances.
  • Identify four systems of support the nurse can access to assist in coping with death anxiety and loss.
