Description:
This course compiles 6 mini-courses about Infection Control and is part of HEN’s “What You Need to Know and Do” recommended mandatory staff and volunteer training series. Designed specifically for hospice and palliative employees and volunteers, mini-courses include: Overview, Hand Hygiene, Bloodborne Pathogens, Standard and Transmission-Based Precautions, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Hepatitis B Vaccine, and Exposure Control Plan and Exposure Incidents. While each topic has its own objectives, course content, and post-test questions, this entire group counts as a single (1) course selection from the HEN Catalog.

PARTS 1 AND 2: Hand Hygiene - 31 minutes - 0.5 contact hours   OBJECTIVES:

  1. Discuss the following elements as applied to one’s job:
    1. Hand Hygiene
    2. Bloodborne Pathogens
    3. Standard and Transmission-Based Precautions
    4. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
    5. Hepatitis B Virus and Vaccine
    6. Exposure Control Plan and Exposure Incidents.
  2. Demonstrate effective bloodborne pathogen prevention throughout one’s daily practice.
  3. Describe what to do in case of an exposure.

PART 3: Bloodborne Pathogens - 24 minutes  - 0.4 contact hours   OBJECTIVES:

  1. Identify definitions for bloodborne pathogens, other infectious materials, exposure incident, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  2. Identify potential exposure incidents for yourself in your  hospice role.
  3. Choose effective responses to various hospice case study scenarios about bloodborne pathogens.
  4. Describe what a surveyor might look for, to ensure your Hospice is compliant with this OSHA Standard.

PART 4: Standard & Transmission-Based Precautions - 20 minutes  - 0.3 contact hours  OBJECTIVES:

  1. Distinguish between standard and transmission-based precautions.
  2. Distinguish between airborne, droplet, and contact precautions.
  3. Describe applications for oneself, in one’s job.
  4. Describe what a surveyor might look for, to ensure effective standard and transmission-based precautions.

PART 5: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - 29 minutes - 0.4 contact hours   OBJECTIVES:

  1. Identify different types of PPE and what each protects against.
  2. Describe what PPE is needed for your specific job.
  3. Identify the correct order for putting on and removing PPE.
  4. Describe what a surveyor might look for, to ensure safe, effective use of PPE.
  5. Choose effective responses to various hospice case study scenarios about PPE.

PART 6 Hepatitis B Vaccine - 18 minutes  - 0.3 contact hours   OBJECTIVES:

  1. Identify key hospice/palliative care risks for being infected with the Hepatitis B Virus (HBV).
  2. Describe basic elements of the hepatitis B vaccine: effectiveness, safety, administration of, benefits of, and cost.
  3. Identify whom to contact at your agency regarding the hepatitis B vaccine.

PART 7: Exposure Control Plan & Exposure Incidents - 15 minutes  -0.2 contact hours   OBJECTIVES:

  1. Describe why each hospice / palliative care agency must have its own written Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
  2. Describe methods of compliance related to one’s own job and tasks (based on this module) and as defined in your agency’s Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
