Mary Michal is a shareholder in the Health Care Department of Reinhart, Boerner, Van Deuren, pc. and has practiced law since 1977. Mary is a national authority on hospice, palliative and end of life care and has published and lectured extensively on issues such as corporate compliance planning, anti-kickback considerations, physician contracting, managed care contracting and HIPAA compliance. Mary has authored and co-authored a number of publications, including most recently: Hospice and Nursing Home/Assisted Living Contracting Toolkit; Medical Director and Physician Contracting Toolkit for Hospice and Palliative Care; One Patient, One Day: Making Your Hospice a Leader in End of Life Care, a Manual for Growing Hospice the Right Way; and a series of manuals on HIPAA privacy compliance for health care providers and health plans. Mary is past president of the Hospice Organization of Wisconsin, a past commissioner of the National Continuing Care Accreditation Commission and past president of the Hospice Manager's Monograph. She is currently a member of NHPCO’s Regulatory Committee. |

Contracting with SNFs
1.2 contact hour
Of all the vendors with which hospices contract, the skilled nursing facility is probably the most important and most complex to get right. This program provides the viewer with specific regulatory requirements and risk areas associated with providing hospice care in the skilled nursing facility setting.
Medical Directors

This program provides a comprehensive overview of the obligations and regulatory considerations associated with contract relationships between physicians and hospices. Topics covered include Medicare Conditions of Participation, Fraud and Abuse considerations, State Law considerations and key physician contracting issues.
Pre-Hospice Care
1.0 contact hour
This program provides an overview of the obligations and regulatory considerations associated with providing pre-hospice services to persons not enrolled in the hospice program. Topics covered include Anti-kickback Statute, OIG Opinions and Analyses and State Law considerations for Medicare certified hospices developing palliative care and other non-hospice programs.
Understanding Fraud & Abuse and Corporate Compliance: A Primer for Hospices
0.7 contact hour
This program provides a review of the Federal False Claims Act and the Anti-Kickback statute and how fraud investigations occur in hospice programs. An overview of key hospice risk areas identified by the Office of the Inspector General is followed by a discussion of the required components of effective corporate compliance programs.
